USS Tarawa LHA-1

 

 


USS Tarawa (LHA 1), built at Pascagoula, Mississippi and commissioned on May 29, 1976, is a general purpose amphibious assault ship. It can simultaneously fulfill six warfighting requirements: flagship for embarked amphibious squadron, flag or general officer staffs; aircraft carrier, with a 35 aircraft complement including AV-8B Harriers, AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunships, CH-53E Super Stallion and CH-46D/E Sea Knight helicopters; amphibious assault craft launching platform for Navy's newest 40+ knot Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), 135 foot Landing Craft Utility, and Amphibious Assault Vehicles.
